From Lao Cai station to Sa Pa is a 45–60 minute drive up the mountain: Sapa Relax Hotel & Spa is 33.6 km away by road. Shared minivans wait outside the station for each night train and charge about VND 40,000–60,000 a person; a taxi or pre-booked car costs VND 400,000–550,000 and comes closer to the hotel (January 2026). Since 10 October 2026 the three night trains from Hanoi arrive at 05:20, 05:50 and 06:27.
Minivans finish near the Stone Church or the lake, a short walk downhill from Dong Loi Street. A hotel pick-up from Lao Cai has no published price, and check-in is from 14:00.
The night trains, and what time you reach Lao Cai
Vietnam Railways added a third nightly train to Lao Cai on 10 October 2026, so the choice is now between three departures from Hanoi’s main station. All three take a little under eight hours and reach the border town in the early-morning half-light. Soft-sleeper berths cost VND 540,000 in a six-berth compartment and VND 790,000 in a four-berth one (October 2026); the private cabins sold by tour companies are carriages coupled to these same trains.
| Train | Leaves Hanoi | Reaches Lao Cai | In Sa Pa by about |
|---|---|---|---|
| SP15 (new from 10 Oct 2026) | 21:45 | 05:20 | 06:30–07:00 |
| SP3 | 22:00 | 05:50 | 07:00–07:30 |
| SP7 | 22:40 | 06:27 | 07:30–08:00 |
The last column adds a 5–20 minute wait for a minivan to fill and the 45–60 minute climb. On the way home, SP8 leaves Lao Cai by day at 12:05 and the two night trains at 21:25 and 21:50.
Five ways up from the station, side by side
Everything below starts from the forecourt of Lao Cai station. Prices are what guides and operators published between March 2024 and October 2026; the date is shown with each one.

Shared minivan: the default
Drivers stand outside the exit as each train empties, and a van leaves once it is full, usually after 5 to 20 minutes. Guides quote VND 40,000–60,000 per person (January 2026) and VND 40,000–50,000 (October 2026); a seat booked ahead with a cabin operator or agency runs to VND 100,000–150,000 (September 2026). Settle the fare before your bag goes in the back. Vans finish at a central point, near the lake or the old church, and you can ask the driver to stop by the church, which suits Sapa Relax well.
Public bus route 1: cheap, but not timed to the trains
Lao Cai runs a public route 1 bus from the station square to the head of Thach Son Street beside the church. Its 2021 timetable listed ten trips a day, the first leaving Lao Cai at 05:50; a March 2024 guide put the fare at VND 30,000 with up to 10 kg of luggage free, and a provincial notice in January 2025 confirmed it was still running. We found no timetable for 2026, so treat it as a useful back-up for a later arrival rather than a plan for the first train.
Taxi from the rank
Taxis wait at the station at any hour. A fair fare for the full climb is about VND 450,000 for a four-seater, and Sa Pa’s meters run at roughly VND 12,000–17,500 per km (July 2026), though drivers on this route usually quote a fixed price. Mai Linh and the green electric cars of Taxi Xanh Sapa are the names guides suggest. Agree the price, or see the meter switched on, before you set off.
Pre-booked car or a hotel pick-up
A private car booked through an agency costs about the same as a taxi, VND 400,000–550,000, but the driver waits with your name on a sign and the price is fixed. Sapa Relax publishes a car from Noi Bai airport (VND 350,000 per person each way, 24 hours’ notice) but no price for Lao Cai; a station pick-up is on request — ask the hotel when you book, and get the fare in writing.
The drive up: hairpins, fog and a newer road
The classic route is National Road 4D, which leaves the Red River valley and climbs through tight bends past small rice terraces and wooden farmhouses. Since February 2024 some drivers use a 13.8 km toll link from the Noi Bai–Lao Cai expressway to Mong Sen bridge near Trung Chai, which charged VND 24,000 per car when it opened; the old road stays free. On an empty road the routing estimate is under half an hour, but expect 45–60 minutes in a van.
Fog is the bigger variable. In February 2026 Lao Cai traffic police warned that fog sat on parts of National Road 4D around Sa Pa from early afternoon until about 9 am the next morning, exactly when the station vans run. If you get carsick, take something before the train arrives and sit near the front.
The last few hundred metres to Dong Loi Street
The hotel, at 19A Dong Loi Street, sits below the main square rather than on it. By our map measurements the Stone Church is 325 m away on foot, Sun Plaza 270 m and Sa Pa Lake 740 m, and elevation data puts the hotel about 30 metres lower than the church. So the walk from the usual minivan stop is short and downhill; it is the next morning’s walk out that climbs. Our location guide has the full table of walking times.
If you come by taxi
Dong Loi is narrow and steep, and guests report cars stopping short of the entrance while staff come down for the bags. Give the driver the street number and Sun Plaza as the landmark, and send the hotel your train and expected arrival time with the booking so someone is ready; whether they can meet you is on request — ask the hotel when you book.
If you come by minivan or bus
Ask to be let off at the church. From the square, head down past Sun Plaza towards Dong Loi; with a wheeled case on a damp morning, take it slowly, as Sa Pa’s pavements are uneven. A backpack makes this stretch, and every walk in Sa Pa, far easier.
Arriving at 7 am: bags, breakfast and when you get a room
Check-in at Sapa Relax is from 14:00, so most train passengers have half a day to fill. Guests who arrived at dawn describe leaving their bags at the desk, washing and waiting in the lobby; an earlier room happens only if one is free. If you need a bed the moment you arrive, the only sure way is to start your booking on the previous date, as our house-rules page explains.
Breakfast is a buffet from 06:30 to 10:00, but whether you can join it before your stay begins is on request — ask the hotel when you book. The alternative is to eat at one of the breakfast stalls across from Lao Cai station before the van leaves. After that the morning sorts itself out: the mountain train down to the Fansipan cable car starts at Sun Plaza, four minutes up the hill, and the church square is a five-minute stroll. The guide to the hotel covers the rooftop, rooms and everything else.
Questions about getting from Lao Cai to Sapa
Which night train arrives at the best time for Sa Pa?
For most travellers, SP3. It reaches Lao Cai at 05:50, a little more sleep than SP15 while still putting you in Sa Pa by about 07:30. SP15, at 05:20, suits early starters; SP7, at 06:27, gives an extra half-hour of sleep and puts you in town around 08:00, when the hotel breakfast is still running.
Do I need to book the minivan from Lao Cai station in advance?
No. Shared minivans meet every night train and leave as soon as they fill, so you can simply walk out and take a seat. Book ahead only if you want a guaranteed vehicle, a fixed price or a car to the hotel door, which is worth it with children, a lot of luggage or an arrival after dark.
Is there a public bus from Lao Cai station to Sa Pa?
Yes, route 1 runs from the station square to the church in central Sa Pa. A March 2024 guide gave the fare as VND 30,000, and it was still running in January 2025. Its timetable has not been republished since 2021, when the first bus left at 05:50, so for the earliest trains a minivan is the safer bet.
How do I get from Sa Pa back down to Lao Cai for the night train?
Allow at least an hour and a quarter. The return trains leave Lao Cai at 21:25 and 21:50, so leaving Sa Pa around 19:30 gives a margin for fog and evening traffic. Ask at the front desk to book a seat on a shuttle or call a taxi, and keep your bags at the hotel after the 12:00 check-out.
Can I get a taxi at Lao Cai station before dawn?
Yes. Taxis and minivans work the station rank for every early train, so you will not be left waiting in the dark. Use a marked company car such as Mai Linh or Taxi Xanh Sapa, agree the fare first, and photograph the car before you get in if you want an extra record.
